University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls Earn First Win vs MCLA

After going down 2-1 in the bottom of the first, the Owls exploded for 11 runs over the next six innings, and defeated the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, 12-5 in the nightcap Wednesday morning at Lake Myrtle Park in the RussMatt Baseball Tournament. The Owls had lost 9-4 in the opener. UMPI ends their seven game and is now 1-7. The Trailblazers drops to 6-3.

The Owls jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the top of the first, as Ricky Goupille (Presque Isle, ME) reached on an infield single, and scored on a line drive RBI double to center by Timothy Burns (Green Cove Springs, FL). MCLA took its only lead in the bottom of the inning, with a pair of tallies. The Owls went in front for good in the top of the third with three runs. UMPI tied the game on an unearned run and made it 3-2 on a Joey Lippo (Coupeville, WA) RBI single to center. Garrett Chadwick (Brighton, CO) scored on a wild pitch. The Owls scored four more times in the third frame. Colin Clifford ( Lake Havasu City, AZ) walked with the bases loaded, Preston Bass (Crestview, FL) RBI ground out to the pitcher and Chadwick connected on a two-run single to left. UMPI scored their final four runs in the sixth, with the help of two MCLA errors.  

Dakota Morrow (Presque Isle, ME) picked up the first Owls win of the season, as he went the distance, scattering nine hits with one strikeout. Jaden Palumbo (Hanson, MA) took the loss for the Trailblazers, as he pitched into the third inning. Garrett Brunette (Fairhaven, MA), Rob Correia (Waterbury, CT), and Elyjah Garneau (Pawtucket, RI) also pitched for MCLA. Goupille and Burns each had two hits for the Owls. Austin Rachiele (Pittsfield, MA) and Randy Adams (Fullerton, CA) each had a pair for MCLA. 

In the opener, It was all the Trailblazers as they went up 4-0 after three innings, and doubled their score in the fourth. UMPI came back and cut the lead in the bottom of the frame before MCLA ended the scoring with a single run in the seventh. Brian Rosario (Elmhurst, NY) was the winning pitcher as he threw five complete innings, striking out seven. Brunette and Vincent Scappaticcio (Fair Lawn, NJ) each pitched an inning for MCLA. Ian McCray (Corinth, ME) suffered the loss for the Owls, as he threw the first four innings. Mason Long (Orrington, ME) pitched the final three for UMPI. 

Rachiele lead all batters as he went 4-4 for MCLA. Teammates Jayco Pena (Salem, MA) had three knocks, while Clarence Givhans (Brooklyn, NY) and Justin Hernandez (Bronx, NY) each had two hits. Preston Bass (Crestview, FL) was 3-3 and 2 RBIs for the Owls.

Game 1 (9-4 – Trailblazers)

On the mound:
Brian Rosario was the winning pitcher as he threw five complete innings, striking out seven. Brunette and Vincent Scappaticcio each pitched an inning for MCLA. Ian McCray suffered the loss for the Owls, as he threw the first four innings. Mason Long pitched the final three for UMPI. 

At the plate:
Rachiele led all batters as he went 4-4 for MCLA. Teammates Jayco Pena had three knocks, while Clarence Givhans and Justin Hernandez each had two hits. Preston Bass was 3-3 and 2 RBIs for the Owls.

Game 2 (12-5 – Owls)

On the mound:
