Maine Maritime women's basketball beat NESCAC opponent, Bates College 70-63 for the first time in program history after being down by 15 points at halftime. Maria Barela (Albuquerque, N.M.) led the Mariners with a team high 19 points, eight rebounds, a game-high five steals, and four assists.
How it Happened: Bates College took an early lead on the Mariners in the first quarter, ending with five more points on the board. In the second half, the Bobcats dominated the Mariners, outscoring them 21-9 to take a 15 point lead going into halftime.
The Mainers regrouped at the half, coming out strong in the third quarter. Lauren Plissey (Hermon, Maine) started off the second half with a made layup that sparked a seven point run for Maine Maritime. The Bobcats got the score back up to a 14 point lead before the Mariners went on another big run started by an 'and-one' from Holly Reeder-Morning (Kingston, Mass.) to tie the game at 48 all. The game continued going back-and-forth. Maine Maritime took a two point lead with 1:20 left on the clock and never looked back, claiming a 70-63 victory.
Inside the Numbers:
- Barela had a team high 19 points, eight rebounds, a game-high five steals, and four assists.
- Plissey added 15 points, nine rebounds, three steals, three assists, and one block to the mix.
- Grace Huntwork (Gretna, Neb.) and Evelyn Dagan (Castine, Maine) each chipped in 10 points.
- Morgan Kennedy recorded a game-high 26 points, while Meghan Graff added 10 for the Bobcats.
- Maine Maritime shot 42.9% from the floor and 41.7% from beyond the arc, while Bates College shot 34.2% from the hardwood and 25.9% from three point land.
