Maine Maritime Academy Director of Athletics Steve Peed announced changes to the Academy's women's lacrosse staff at the beginning of the 2023 calendar year. Current Associate Head Coach, Jeremy Pease '00 was promoted to Head Women's Lacrosse Coach, effective January 1, 2023. Pease took over for Peed on January 1. Peed will remain with the program as an assistant coach.
"I am committed to doing everything I can to ensure the success of this team and the Academy," said Pease. "So much of what we do is coming up with a plan, and then scrapping it when things aren't going the way we expected. But it's the unwavering effort to get the job done that usually wins out. Persistence and lofty goals, that's our starting point, and two of the many items in our recipe for success!"
Pease was heavily involved in all aspects of the program in 2022, the most successful season on the field for the young Mariners' program. Picked to finish sixth in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) preseason poll, Maine Maritime advanced to the NAC Championship game. Without any seniors and only three players on the roster that had ever played a game together prior to the year, the 2022 Mariners posted eight wins, the most in the six full seasons of lacrosse at Maine Maritime. The team picked up the first postseason win in program history, defeating Cazenovia College in the NAC semifinals.
The 2022 Mariners produced the NAC Rookie of the Year and First-Team All-NAC selection, Hazel Stoddard. Stoddard finished the regular season fifth in NCAA in Division III in goals and sixth in goals per game. She was one of six all-league nods with the Mariners landing three on the All-NAC First Team and three on the All-NAC Second Team. One of the first team selections and one of the second team selections had never touched a lacrosse stick prior to the season.
Peed has run the program since October 2019 and hands over the reins after three years that only included one full season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He will continue to serve as the team's defensive coordinator.
"I took over the program specifically to get us to this point where we were ready to flourish as a program under a coach who shared my vision for this team," said Peed. "It's difficult to hand this off after having given so much time and energy to it, but this is the right moment for me to step aside for continued growth of both the program and our department."
The team was informed of the staffing changes and timeline prior to the start of fall practices in November and all prospective players were notified leading up to the change.
Maine Maritime opens the 2023 season at home against Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday, February 25. North Atlantic Conference play begins on Saturday, April 1 when the Mariners host Thomas College.
