Maine Maritime men's basketball opens up 2023 with a 71- 79 loss against Colby College in a non-conference matchup on Monday afternoon.

 

How it Happened: The Mules got off to a quick start against the Mariners, taking a 21-4 lead seven minutes into the game. The momentum from the Mariners started to change when Carter Rubin (Littleton, Colo.) splashed a three-point shot and Maine Maritime got within nine points. The Mules responded with another run of their own, leading by 19 with 3:33 left in the first half. The half ended with Colby College taking a 43-28 lead.

 

The Mariners came out on fire, starting with a layup from Curt Heinz (Stuttgart, Germany) and cutting the lead down by six points with 13 minutes left off the clock. Maine Maritime stuck around for the rest of the second half, but it was too little too late, taking a 71-79 loss.

 

Inside the Numbers:

  • Heinz tallied a double-double with game-highs of 27 points and 12 rebounds, along with another game-high five assists.
  • Josiah Dancy (Orlando, Fla) added 15 points, three assists, two rebounds, and one steal to the mix.
  • Markus Ramirez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) came off the bench with nine points, four rebounds, and two assists.
  • Will King recorded 23 points for the Mules, while Noah Tyson added 13.
  • The Mariners shot 49.2% from the floor and 40% from the three point line, while the Mules shot 46.7% from the hardwood and 27.6% from beyond the arc.
