The Owls women's basketball team travels down to Puerto Rico to compete in the 2022 Classico in San Juan | University of Maine at Presque Isle

The Owls women's basketball team travels down to Puerto Rico to compete in the 2022 Classico in San Juan. The Owls started their trip facing off against Williams Smith College in the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum. The Owls fought in the tight game, battling for four quarters and eventually falling to the Herons, 64-58.

UMPI found themselves up by one after the first quarter, then capitalizing on their lead to close out the first half, leading 28-24. With four ties and 12 lead changes, the back and forth battle continued in the second half as the Owls held onto the lead, with the score 50-49 going into the fourth quarter. An early quarter run by the Herons gave them a seven point lead off 5-9 shooting in the first four minutes of the quarter. The Owls brought the lead down to six, holding off the runs by the Herons, although in the final two minutes of the game, neither team was able to get points on the board as the Owls fell short.

Emily Wheaton led all scorers with 25 points on 8-19 shooting and hitting 5 of 12 threes on the game, also adding four steals to her stat line. Kourtney West came up big for the Owls off the bench, hitting 4-8 from the field, totaling at 12 points and grabbing nine rebounds, six of which were offensive.

The Owls will continue their Puerto Rico trip with their final game against Misericordia University at 2:00PM.
