University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls Overcome Laser's in OT Win

The University of Maine at Presque Isle women's basketball team earns their first win of the year in an overtime victory vs Lasell University. The Owls 87-82 win brings them to 1-2 on the year, beating the now 0-3 Lasell Laser's.

The teams battled back and forth in the annual U-Maine at Farmington Tipoff Tournament, the game stayed tight throughout with 12 ties and 23 lead changes and Laser's with their largest lead of seven points. Coming out hot the Owls would shoot 60% from the field and 50% from three in the first 10 minutes of the game, while Lasell shot 57% from both. The teams cooled down in the second quarter, as the game stayed tied 47 each at the half. The high scoring game continued to cool down after the hot start as Lasell would take a two point lead with just 10 minutes to go. The Owls four point lead late was answered by some free throws and a layup by the Laser's to tie the game 75 each with just 13 second left before heading to OT.

Leading scorers Alexis Ireland and Emily Wheaton started the scoring for UMPI to bring them to a quick four point lead. Although Lasell would battle back and tie the game, as the team were tied 82 each with 1:39 left. Another five points for the Wheaton and Ireland duo to go along with back to back defensive stops, the Owls took their largest lead of the game, up five points with just a couple seconds to go. Earning their first win of the year.

Wheaton led all scorers with 24 points on 7-12 shooting, all made field goals coming from two as the shooter managed to get inside and also finish the game 10-13 from the free throw line. Ireland finished with an impressive 22 points also off seven field goals and going 8-12 from the free throw line. Not only scoring, Ireland also grabbed 14 rebounds including eight offensive rebounds. Junior transfer Aleia Milano scored her career high as an Owl with 17 points on seven field goals, adding seven rebounds and six assists. Jelecia Ma'Gee-Hodges also finished in double digits for the Owls, scoring ten points on an efficient 5-6 shooting.
