University of Maine at Presque Isle Volleyball Competes at USM

The UMPI Owls Volleyball team traveled to University of Southern Maine to compete in a two game tournament playing against the USM Huskies and the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs. The Owls fell in both sets, 3-0.

Game 1

The Owls found themselves in familiar territory starting out as they were battling in back and forth action. UMass Dartmouth would quickly capitalize off of kills and service aces in order to put them ahead 8-15 early on. Being able to keep momentum on the Corsairs side they would find themselves in a 7-1 run late in the game just before they finished the set at 13-25.

Set two would look promising for the Owls early on as Rachael Walker was able to grab three kills in a row while shortly after teammate Alondra Lopez added another kill. The Corsairs would quickly shift momentum though and go for a 11-1 run puttin the Owls down 6-15. Later in the match UMASS Dartmouth would find success in a five point run, but the Owls would battle back and go on a four point run themselves lead by a kill and service aces from Alexis Engel. Despite UMPI efforts they would fall 15-25.

During set three the Owls struggled to find any momentum despite grabbing the first three points of the set. Trying to capitalize off of Corsairs errors would not give the Owls enough in order to pick up the final set of the game as they fell 12-25.

Game 2

The Owls started off to a slow start in set one as the Huskies went for a 1-11  run early on to put them ahead 5-14. Capitalizing off  a couple Huskie errors the Owls would try and switch the momentum but they found themselves losing set one 8-25.

Set two had a lot of back and forth battles as both teams capitalized off of errors and kills. The Owls found themselves trailing 7 points until the Huskies went on a 6 point run to put them ahead towards the end of the set. The Huskies took set two 13-25.

Unlike set two the Owls started out strong in set three going on a 6 point run that started with a kill from Makayla Miskiewicz. Two kills from teammate Alexis Engel and a service error from the Huskies would bring the set to 12-11. Both teams would continue in back and forth action until the end when the Huskies went for yet another run to close the set out.

On the day the the Owls were led by Makayla Miskiewicz who had 9 kills on the day while Walker added another 7. Lopez also had 6 kills. The Owls will continue their season October 8th as they face off with Northern Vermont University- Johnson.
