Maine Maritime Academy's Rachel Melampy (Duxbury, Mass.) has been named the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Volleyball Player of the Week, while Sydney Rich (Williamsburg, Va.) was named the Defensive Player of the Week and Ila Smith (Lexington, Ky.) was named the Rookie of the Week.
Melampy had a highlight weekend, leading her team to 3-0 overall and becoming the third Mariners Volleyball player to reach the 1,000 kill milestone. The senior tallied 44 kills, 27 digs, seven aces, five assists, one block, and one block assist in three matches. On Friday, Melampy had a game-high 11 kills, along with six digs, two assists, and one ace against Saint Joseph's (Me.). She followed up on Saturday against the University of New England with game-highs of 16 kills and six aces, in addition to 13 digs and two assists and against the University of Southern Maine with a game-high 17 kills, eight digs, an assist, a block, and block assist to finish out the weekend.
Rich anchored the Mariners defense that went 3-0 this weekend, totaling 46 digs, seven aces, three assists, and one kill. She started out the weekend with a game-high 15 digs, two aces, and one assist. Rich followed up on Saturday with 17 digs and three aces against the University of New England and recorded a game-high 14 digs, along with two assists, and one kill against the University of Southern Maine.
Smith made an immediate impact for the Mariners, helping lead the team to a 3-0 opening weekend against tough non-conference opponents. The first-year middle hitter tallied 29 kills (on a .468 hitting percentage), five block assists, three digs, one block solo, and one assist on the weekend. In her collegiate debut, she recorded nine kills on .500 hitting, two block assists, and one dig against Saint Joseph's (Me.). She followed up on Saturday against the University of New England with seven kills, two digs, and one block assist and 13 kills on .526 hitting, two block assists, a block, and an assist against the University of Southern Maine later in the afternoon.
