Chantel Williams from Oroville, California will be joining the UMPI Owls Women's Basketball Team this fall in a statement released by Head Basketball Coach Gavin Kane. Williams is a graduate of Las Plumas High School and also attended Butte College in Butte County, California. She is currently double majoring in Criminology and Sociology.
"Chantel will bring great versatility to our team as well as valuable college playing experience." said Coach Kane. "She can play multiple positions comfortably and will provide us with an intense player who loves to mix it up defensively and on the boards. Offensively she can play on the wing or go into the low post. Defensively, I love the fact that she can defend a good scoring guard or defend in the post, and she will go after rebounds aggressively."
Williams, a 5'8" Junior, was her High School Team's Captain and honored with the Mark Beard Award given to the player who shows the greatest compassion for the game, leadership, and integrity. She helped her Team to back-to-back West Side League Championships while averaging 9.5 points and 6 rebounds per game. While at Butte College, Chantel averaged 10.1 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2 assists per game. She was a 2019-2020 Golden Valley Conference All-Star her sophomore season as the Lady Roadrunner's finished with a 23-7 record and the school's 1st Championship in 20 years.
"What attracted me most to UMPI was the excitement of getting to continue my basketball career in a brand-new environment, since I have spent all of my time in California," said Williams. "As a player, I absolutely love rebounding the ball and I thrive best in a fast-paced game. I'm extremely excited and looking forward to being an Owl! "
Chantel's goals include obtaining her MSW and to pursue a career that involves working with troubled youth. Her hobbies include CrossFit, video games and volunteer work. The UMPI Women's Basketball Team, Coaches and Community welcome Chantel Williams to our Owls Family.
