Historical Women of UMPI: Dr. Constance Carlson served as interim president for one year before being hired permanently as the University’s fifth leader. She was the first woman president in the University of Maine System. Dr. Carlson remained in the position for six years, retiring in 1986. During her administration, there were additions to program offerings, including accounting, liberal studies and fine arts.
