Eight was the magic number for the SUNY-Poly baseball team as they shutout the Owls,8-0, in both games of the doubleheader Thursday at Lake Myrtle Park in the RussMatt Baseball Tournament.
After five scoreless innings, the Wildcats scored four runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings. Alexander Bonacci (Rocky Point, NY) and Paul Barbato (Utica, NY) each collected three hits for SUNY-Poly. Joey Lippo (Coupeville, WA) had two hits for the Owls. Starting pitcher Garrett Chadwick (Brighton, CO) and Ricardo Garcia (Middleburg, FL) had a hit for UMPI. Aaron Kifer recorded the shutout for the Wildcats, as he scattered four hits while striking out six. Chadwick pitched six innings, while Blake Howes (Patten, ME) and Ian McCray (Corinth, ME) pitched in the seventh.
In game two, the Wildcats took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the second. SUNY-Poly scored five runs in the fourth on the long balls. Paul Barber (Nassau, NY) had a three-run homer to left, while teammate Ethan Walker (Southampton, NY) connected on a two-run blast to left. Timothy Burns (Green Cove Springs, FL) had two hits for the Owls. Carter Romansky (Voorheesville, N.Y) picked up the win for the Wildcats as he tossed the first six innings. Alex Quig (Brewerton, N.Y.) pitched the seventh. Jordan Young (Graham, NC) suffered the loss for the Owls as he pitched into the fourth. Spencer Harman (Sidney, BC, Canada) finished the game for UMPI.
