University of Maine at Presque Isle The Mules Sweep the Owls in Season Opener

The Owls baseball team started their 2023 campaign with in state rival, Colby College. The Mules won both games of the doubleheader, 18-2 and 21-0, at Coombs field Sunday.

In game one, Clint Flippo hit for the cycle in his only four plate appearances of the game. Flippo tripled to center in the first inning, doubled to left in the second, singled to left in the fourth. Flippo ended his game with a three-run homer deposited into the snow beyond the left field fence. The Owls did start some trouble in the top of the first. Ricky Goupille (Presque Isle, ME) reached on an error, and went to third on a passed ball. After two strikeouts, Colin Clifford (Lake Havasu, AZ) and Payton Jones (Green Cove Springs, FL) walked loading the bases. The inning ended as the Mules starter Nick Thompson eventually struck out the side. Colby scored five runs in the first and a pair in the second. Colby sent a dozen men to the plate scoring nine times to make it 16-0 after four innings of play.

The Owls ruined the shutout by scoring single runs in the fifth and seventh frames. Garrett Chadwick (Brighton, CO) walked, stole second and scored on an infield single by Joey Lippo (Coupeville, WA). Brock Thompson (Cory Pit, ME) plated the second Owls run, with a leadoff homer to left in the seventh, in the rookies first college game. The Mules scored a pair in the fifth.

In the nightcap, it was all the Mules. Colby scored a pair in the first, and added five more in the second and six more times in the third frame. The Mules added a three spot in the fourth inning. After a scoreless fifth, Colby ended their scoring with five runs in the sixth.

Game 1 (18-2 – Mules):

On the mound:

Spencer Harmon (Sydney, BC Canada) started the game for the Owls in the first game of the year. In the three innings, he allowed six hits and seven earned runs. Jordan Young (Graham, NC) and Mason Long (Orrington, ME) followed Harmon to the hill. Nick Thompson earned the win for Colby pitching four innings and only allowing one hit, with seven strikeouts. Thomas Rioux and Greg Levin finished the game for the Mules.

At the plate:

Besides Brock Thompson's leadoff homer in the seventh, Ricky Goupille and Joey Lippo each had a single for the Owls. Joey Blake (Standardsville, VA) had a double for UMPI. Cole Palmeiri drove home five runs, three scoring on a homer to left in the fourth. Clint Flippo knocked home three teammates, while completing the cycle, for the Mules.

Game 2 (21-0 – Mules):

On the mound:

Garrett Chadwick started the game, pitching the first three innings striking out one batter and allowed 13 hits and 13 earned runs. Dakota Morrow (Presque Isle, ME) and Blake Howes (Patten, ME) finished out the final three innings. Julian Erro earned the win for the Mules, pitching four innings and striking out eight batters and allowing one hit. Teddy Durbin, Adam Schwartz and Joe Sylvester completed the shutout on the bump.

At the plate:

Campton Tinkham (Manchester, ME) recorded the Owls only hit of the game in his only at bat. Brock Thompson had one walk on the game. They were the only baserunners that the Owls had for the entire contest.  Brady O'Brien finished with four RBI's for the Mules including his home run in the fourth. O'Brien had a homerun during last year's opener against UMPI as well.

The Owls will head back to Presque Isle before heading down to Florida to play in their annual spring tournament.
