Bates College Two top-20 finishes for Nordic skiing in 15K mass start at SMC Carnival

Women's junior captain Olivia Cuneo and men's senior captain Zander Martin both netted top-20 finishes for the Bates Nordic skiing team Saturday in the 15K classical technique race at the Saint Michael's Carnival, hosted by Middlebury at Rikert Nordic Center. 

Martin (York, Maine) led the way, taking 17th place out of 83 competitors in the men's race, crossing the finish line in 43:52.1. He earned 25 carnival points and 15 NCAA points for his efforts. Junior Cal Schrupp (Gilford, N.H.) and sophomore Mathias Boudreau-Golfman (Londonderry, Vt.) rounded out the scoring for the Bates men, with Schrupp taking 40th place in 45:37.8 and Boudreau-Golfman finishing 44th in 45:52.1. The men combined for 49 carnival points.

On the women's side, Cuneo (St. George, Vt.) finished in 19th place out of 83 competitors with her time of 50:45.72. This earned the Bobcats 23 carnival points and Cuneo picked up 12 NCAA points for her performance. First-year Liza Bell (Putney, Vt.) and senior Rebecca Feist (Concord, Mass.) rounded out the scoring for the Bates women, with Bell taking 41st place in 54:04.9 and Feist finishing 44th in 54:34.9. The women combined for 45 carnival points.

Through two days of the Saint Michael's Carnival, the Bates Nordic skiing team compiled 208 points, good for ninth place. Their score will be combined with the alpine skiing team, whose races were rescheduled for Feb. 3 and 4 at Smugglers' Notch. 

The Nordic skiing team is back in action Friday and Saturday when the Bobcats compete at the UNH Carnival, held at JacksonXC.
