The University of Maine at Presque Isle community mourns the unexpected passing of beloved Head Women's Soccer Coach and Associate Professor Aaron Marston. Marston has served multiple roles at UMPI but most currently was serving as an Associate Professor in the Exercise Science Department and as the Head Women's Soccer Coach where the women's soccer program had seen tremendous growth under his leadership.
Keli Marston along with her husband Aaron took over the women's soccer program midway through the 2018 season where the Owls finished 2-13. Aaron Marston was then officially named the head coach of the team while Keli continued to coach as an assistant coach in 2019. The women's soccer program saw immediate improvement with a 7-6-2 record, narrowly missing the playoffs in their second season competing in the North Atlantic Conference. After a shortened 2020 fall season where the Owls were one of only two teams to compete in games in the state of Maine, the team took another step in elevating their program earning their first ever North Atlantic Conference playoff bid in the 2021 season. Currently the Owls sit with their best record since 2011 at 6-3-4 overall and 5-2-1 in NAC play.
On Saturday, October 15, 2022 in Coach Marston's last game coaching, the Owls celebrated their seven seniors, which just so happened to be Marston's first ever recruiting class that he brought in four years ago. UMPI would go on to have one of their best wins of the season with a 4-0 win over conference opponent Thomas College.
This weekend's women's soccer game has been postponed; however, the women's team has decided to continue the season in their beloved coach's honor.
