Cost of education increases for all University of Maine at Fort Kent students in 2022-23 school year

The University of Maine at Fort Kent reported a 3.5% rise in in-state tuition fees for the 2022-23 school year, based on the most recent data release, according to the latest disclosure from the National Center for Education Statistics.

Maine residents paid $8,805 to attend the public four-year institution in 2022-23, marking a $300 increase from the $8,505 charged during the 2021-22 academic year.

Non-resident students faced tuition costs 54.2% higher than those of residents in 2022-23, amounting to $13,575. This represents a 5.1% increase from the previous year’s rate of $12,915.

Approximately 67% of the undergraduate student body at the university are Maine residents. Students from other states make up about 19%, while international students account for 11%.

Data indicates that all full-time undergraduates who enrolled in the 2022-23 academic year received some form of financial aid. Specifically, 48 students were awarded grants or scholarships totaling $378,635, and 25 students secured student loans exceeding $159,275.

Across the entire undergraduate population, 374 students benefited from grants or scholarships amounting to $2.5 million. Additionally, 249 students obtained federal student loans totaling $1.6 million.

Undergraduate education costs have seen a significant increase over the past few decades. Data shows a 169% rise in the average total cost, including tuition, fees, room, and board, between 1980 and 2020.

According to a 2023 College Board report, in-state students at public universities paid an average of $11,260, while out-of-state students paid $29,150 in the 2023-24 academic year.

Meanwhile, student loan debt has steadily increased over the last 30 years, reaching $1.75 trillion in 2024, averaging a total of $28,950 per borrower. Federal loans make up 92% of the debt, with over half of students at both public and private four-year colleges graduating with student loans.
